Peak moving season generally takes place in the summer and amidst the chaos of moving itself with some added heat, it could be a recipe for disaster!

Here’s a few things you could do to not only stay calm, but cool:

1. Plan Ahead
Plan in advance. Summers are the busiest time of the year for most moving companies. The schedules fill up fast and you’re often left with very little flexibility if you plan last minute. Pack, and be as organized as possible prior to the arrival of your movers.

2. Try to Book your Move for the Morning
In general, the intensity of the sun and UV rays are strongest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We prefer to start moving first thing in the morning. Try a different moving date if you cannot get a morning start.

3. Hydrate Yourself
Moving is basically a day-long workout. You wouldn’t go to the gym without a bottle of water, would you? Keep some cool water at arm’s reach all the time throughout the day and get some shade during your breaks.

4. Turn on the AC and Fans
If you have access to air conditioning, try to get it going before the move starts so yourself and your movers will stay cool. If there is no AC, try spreading some fans around the house in the common areas to keep the temperatures down a little bit.

5. Try to Book your Moves Mid-Month
In the moving industry, higher rates usually apply at the beginning and end of each month. Particularly during the summer. Try to book around mid-month if you are flexible to not only get a better rate – but also availability.

6. Do your Research!
Don’t go with simply what is cheapest. Talk to several different companies. Often the lowest priced companies have hidden fees or are less transparent than others. You’re then hit with an invoice much larger than your estimate anticipated. Look at reviews, ask questions, ensure that there is full transparency for the estimation process and there are no hidden fees. Get an item by item inventory done or have an in-house estimate to get accurate estimates.

7. Tighten your Inventory
Don’t immediately bring everything with you. Remove junk prior to the move, items you don’t want, etc. Have a garage sale or two weeks before the move. Pack up most of the items yourself, have things ready to go for the movers before arrival. Fewer items = lower transportation costs.
