Its moving day! The movers are here, now what?
Read on to find out more about moving day etiquette.

At first, it can be a little awkward, but remember they are professionals. You could tend to hover or supervise, however, staying busy and out of the way is essential for a successful move. Not only will this reduce the chance of accidents, but it can also help your move to finish on time.

Here are some suggestions to help you prepare.

Finish packing before moving day

If you are doing your own packing, make sure you have your part done before the movers come. Their job is much easier if the house is completely ready to be put on the truck when they pull in. If they need to wait for you to finish packing, it could delay the move finishing on time and may cost you more.

Label each box clearly with its destination in your new home. IE: Bedroom #2, or Sophie’s Room. In addition, be sure to mark on the box if it is fragile or a little heavy.
Once at your new home, label each door as to what you labelled on the box.

Don’t pack heavy items in large boxes

Granted our movers are used to transporting heavy and light boxes, but if it’s too heavy for you, it may be to heavy for your movers. Packing your items in the appropriate size box is key to a successful move. Use a smaller box to pack books, larger box to pack linen or towels. At Burly Boyz, we have many different size of boxes to choose from. Our Edmonton location provides FREE BOXES for every move. However, for the time being, this benefit is currently on hold due to Covid 19.

Easy, hassle-free access

Assist your movers by making sure you know where they can park their truck, how they can best access your home/apartment/business, and if there are any time limitations on parking or moving hours. Reserving the elevator in advance will make everything run smooth.

Should I stay or should I go? What do I do about the kids and animals?

Moving etiquette says you should stay around the house, and let your movers know where to find you if you need to pop out for a short while.

Keep your children and fur babies out of harms way. Make arrangement to have a neighbour, family member or friend help watch over them until it’s ready to go. If that is not possible, have them in a designated room or area in your home.

Things you should take with you

Delicate or personal items like cash, jewellery, plants and prescription medications should be taken with you.

Liquid and flammable items are not taken by our movers. Not sure of what they can’t take? Check out this helpful list.

To tip or not to tip?

Generally, the standard tipping practice is 10% to 15% of the move total, depending on how long they worked, difficulty of the move, and how pleased you are with their service. Providing snacks and drinks throughout the day is a nice gesture as it will keep your moving team energized.
